Want
a furry companion? Here's an offer that's
hard to turn down.
As the owner of an adorable 15-year-old
cat, carefully selected five years ago from
an abundance of felines sheltered by the Ozaukee
Humane Society, I was touched to see that
the Ozaukee Humane Society and the Wisconsin
Humane Society have decided to push getting
homes for mature animals. They have made November
"Adopt a Senior Animal Month." Read

Out for the Birds!
Save money, save energy, help the
environment and gain valuable public relations
opportunities for your company, all while
saving migratory birds - join WIngs!
Bird watching
is the second fastest-growing hobby in America. In
fact, about one-third of U.S. households feed
birds in their yard. That translates into
spending a total of about $3 billion on related
supplies each year. However, the bird
population is declining because it
is estimated that between 100 million and
one billion migratory birds die annually as
a result of window collisions in North America!

Build
a bird-friendly Wisconsin
We've all heard it before: that heartbreaking
"thud" of a bird hitting our window. Did you
know it is estimated this happens somewhere
between 100 million and one billion times
annually in the United States ? In an attempt
to help save birds, the Wisconsin Humane Society
has launched WIngs: Wisconsin Night Guardians
for Songbirds because bird window collisions
are preventable!

rescue
Milwaukee's Wisconsin Humane Society
wildlife-rescue volunteer Chuck Meyer, a registered
nurse who lives in Glendale, chokes up when
asked to retell the story of how he rescued
two dogs in New Orleans, in the aftermath
of Hurricane Katrina.
"It's a lovely story about two very deserving
dogs who I don't think ever really had a home.
It's a Disney story, it really is," he
says. Read more...

Lucky

JD the dog can't describe how he
got out of an animal shelter in Kentucky,
but he has landed on his feet in Glendale.
JD, now the cherished pet of Chris and Dennis
Blankenburg, was left last year at a shelter
in Georgetown, Ky. -- a region with an oversupply
of adoptable dogs. But through a local program
called Rescue Waggin' that works with the
Wisconsin Humane Society, he got a new lease
on life and a home. Read

Making
a Difference: 3 Women Who Care
Since the
inaugural issue of Wisconsin Woman Magazine
nearly six years ago, we've celebrated the
accomplishments of hundreds of Southeastern
Wisconsin women. The spotlight has been on
those practicing law, those in the field of
entertainment, corporate executives, educators
and outstanding leaders in the community.
Wisconsin Woman features women in medical
practices, in religious service, many writers,
artists and politicians as well as women who
have made noteworthy achievements in specialized
fields.
This year we continue
our mission to honor women, in particular
those who remain steadfast in the belief that
their work does make a difference in the community.
We salute them knowing that, because of their
dedication, the world becomes a better place
in which to live. Each one demonstrates that
there are bountiful fruits to be had because
of their efforts to reach out beyond their
immediate boundaries. Look for future profiles,
quarterly, in Today's Wisconsin Woman. Read
